Hard Maple TreeMaple Hardwood Flooring

Hard Maple (1450 Janka)

Hard maple is over twice as hard as Douglas fir and roughly six percent harder than white oak.  The Janka scale has hard maple at 1450.  White oak comes in at 1360.

Maple is one of the most popular choices when it comes to hardwood flooring in Colorado.  Due to its light color and durability, maple is desired when a "contemporary" look  is sought for a for a wood floor.

Advantages

Maple is stiff, strong, dense, and extremely tough, with excellent shock resistance.  Maple Hard Maple Flooris harder than Oak but not as hard was Hickory.  People are drawn to Maple mostly because of its contemporary look. It is notably resistant to abrasive wear; and for this reason, it is the hardwood flooring of choice for such high-traffic/hard-use locations as bowling alleys, basketball courts, and other sports facilities.

Disadvantages

Solid Maple does not perform very well in the Colorado climate.  There is a lack of dimensional stability and therefore more gapping than Oak or Hickory.  Engineered Maple is the way to go if you are looking for that Maple look.  Maple is more difficult to stain therefore doesn't have the color and looks that Oak has.
