Tigerwood Hardwood (1850 Janka)

Tigerwood is a very dense, heavy and hard wood that is found in the more tropical areas of western Africa. Tigerwood is a highly distinctive exotic wood with vibrant reddish-brown tones and prominent black striping that varies in thickness from fine strokes to thick contours. Its interlocked grain is also wavy and irregular, complimenting the wood’s dynamic appearance. Tigerwood is ranked among the more durable hardwoods with a Janka hardness rating of 1850, making Tigerwood a visually striking floor that lasts.

Tree Characteristics

 Tigerwood is an evergreen tree that grows to 125 feet tall with long leaves that range from four to twelve inches. From April to June, the tigerwood tree produces green and yellow flowers. From August to January, the tree produces a nut similar to a walnut. Other names for this tree are African walnut and Gabon nut.

Photosensitivity

Tigerwood will darken over three months upon light exposure. It will become darker reddish-brown and then stabilize.

Advantages

Tigerwood is a highly durable wood with a high resistance to beetle attack. The wood remains dimensionally stable and is reported to have no odor.

Disadvantages

Tigerwood is time consuming to dry properly while preventing degrade.  Tigerwood is difficult to saw properly and requires carbide-tipped blades. Pre-boring is suggested yet the wood holds nails well once applied. Glue holds well, but presetting is suggested with tigerwood flooring.
